Description
*2016 Maine Lupine Award Winner*
Riley’s birthday is coming, but the mail plane with his gifts from the mainland hasn’t been able to get to the island for days because of bad weather.
In a mood that matches the weather, he agrees to help Uncle Harv collect driftwood to make furniture. One thing leads to another as it always does on a small island, and eventually Riley realizes that everything he needs for a great birthday is already right at hand.

Praise For…
Writing directly from her own experiences as a
longtime resident of Maine’s Matinicus Island, Murray speaks with the ring of
authenticity. Hogan’s lively, brightly colored pastel illustrations bring the
distinctive island setting to life. This book engagingly invites young readers
to explore a different lifestyle from a child’s perspective.
— Kirkus Reviews
I grew up on a small island and I am now raising my own small kids on an
island. It is a unique and amazing experience for children to grow up in tiny,
rural, and isolated communities where they know everyone of all ages. Eva
Murray and Jamie Hogan capture this life well in this wonderful story about the
tiniest of Maine’s islands and a special birthday.
