The Damage by Caitlin Wahrer is a beautifully written psychological thriller, which I read in one day. All thrillers have troubling storylines but the best ones have characters who are complex, and inspire your empathy. This one did that, and had lots of twists and turns, and an ending I never saw coming. It was a great read!

Nowhere Girl by Cheryl Diamond is a memoir about her life with her family on the run internationally, covering her years from age 4 to 30, when she and her mother finally are able to escape the from her abusive and controlling father. The description of the loyalty to the abuser, and self loathing was very real. I often forgot it was non-fiction. It was an interesting read.

This imaginative story is told by 15 year old Vera, daughter of Rose, a Madame in San Francisco during the wild days of the early 1900’s. Morie is paid to raise Vera with her own daughter. She is killed during the earthquake of 1906, and Vera and her step-sister Pie seek to find Rose who was in the part of town that was hardest hit. I liked this one.

Character, plot, and setting all earn rave reviews from me in this book, which begins just before the 1947 fire that demolished many towns in Maine, including the one in which the main character, Grace Holland lives.  The description is brilliant of the unease,  concern, and terror experienced by town’s people as the fire grew .  The  plot contains real life issues and the characters are complex .  I read this one late into the night, because I loved it.

The book club has each member choose the book that matters most. It is about childhood tragedy and personal loss, about resignation and hope. The last few chapters of the book are a total surprise, and catapult this novel into one of my favorites – compelling, complex, and delicious.

I loved Watership Down when I read it back in the early 70s. We all had great discussions about what it meant, and why. When I read that Richard Adams had died, I realized I had to read it again. The phrase “timeless classic” is perfect for this title. Read it again, or discover it now.
